Laredo Bucks News Release
HIDALGO, Texas â The defending CHL Champion Laredo Bucks snapped a four game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at the Dodge Arena. Three different players scored as the Bucks improved to 17-14-1 and with 35 points remain in third place in the Southeast Division. The Bucks return home on Friday night against the Lubbock Cotton Kings. Face off is set for 7:30 p.m. For Laredo Bucks season or single game tickets call (956)-718-BUCKS (2825) or log onto www.laredobucks.com and buy tickets online.
The Killer Bees spent seven of the first 14 minutes of the game on the power play, including a five minute major power play chance, but the Bucks turned in terrific work on the penalty kill to keep Rio Grande Valley off the scoreboard. With less than a minute to go in the first, defenseman Steve Weidlich picked up a loose puck and passed it across the goalmouth to defenseman Dion Hyman for a tap in goal with just 48.7 seconds left. It was the fourth of the year for Hyman.
Late in the second the Bucks were able to strike again. Weidlich again set it up for Laredo as this time he passed the puck across to cutting defenseman Phillippe Lauze who wristed it into the net at 17:52. It was the sixth of the year for Lauze.
In the third period the Bucks lead was cut in half. Rio forward Troy Linna scored on a two-on-one with a wrist shot at 2:53 to bring the Killer Bees within 2-1. Rio continued to threaten but the Bucks were able to withstand the charge. Late in the game Laredo forward Adam Paiement tried to slip a pass across, it deflected off the stick of Rio defenseman Derek Holland and into the net to finish the scoring at 17:06. It was the 14th of the season for Paiement and his seventh against Rio. FINAL SCORE Laredo 3, Rio Grande Valley 1.
David Guerrera stopped 16 of 17 shots to get the win and improve to 7-8-1. Jeff Levy gave up three goals on 26 shots and fell to 10-17-0. Both the Bucks and Killer Bees were 0-4 on the power play.
