Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - An undermanned Cape Breton Eagles team hung around but fell 5-2 to the Charlottetown Islanders on Saturday night in Sydney.
Playing without Nicolas Girouard, Sean Larcohelle and Connor Trenholm, it was an ominous start for the Eagles as Xavier Simoneau had a breakaway opportunity just eight seconds into the game. But he was turned aside by netminder Nicolas Ruccia. Ruccia helped the Eagles weather the storm as the Islanders recorded the first 11 shots of the game.
The twelfth shot was the charm, as just after the conclusion of a power play Michael Horth was able to jam the puck over the goal line to give the visitors a 1-0 edge. The Eagles pushed back as Ivan Ivan rung a shot off the cross bar, but the period finished 1-0 Charlottetown.
However, the Eagles earned a power play late in the period, and it carried over to period two. Kian Bell took advantage of an end board bounce to tie to the game at the tail end of the man advantage When Charlottetown went to their own power play not three minutes later, it was the Eagles who took advantage- Ivan Ivan putting the puck through Oliver Satny's legs to give the home team a 2-1 lead. However, a Sam Oliver shot from the right face-off circle on the same power play knotted the game at 2 before period's end.
Special teams was a theme in the third period as well as in the early stages of the third period, Charlottetown's Ben Boyd was given a five minute major and a game misconduct for a check from behind on FJ Buteau. But less than a minute into the power play, Islanders defenseman Lukas Cormier, like Ivan in the second period, capitalized on a shorthanded breakaway to give Charlottetown the lead. The Eagles were unable to find the net on the balance of the major.
After the halfway mark of the period, there was some four on four action with Charlottetown's Drew Elliot and then Cape Breton's Mikhail Nizovkin (serving a too many men on the ice penalty) in the box. After Elliot's penalty elapsed, Charlottetown defenseman William Trudeau fired a shot from the point by Ruccia to stretch the lead to 4-2.
The Eagles were given a last chance with a late penalty to Brett Budgell, and Ruccia went to the bench to create a 6 on 4 situation. However the Isles killed the penalty off, and then in the game's dying seconds Budgell converted a pass from Keiran Gallant to hit the empty net and conclude the game's scoring.
Satny picked up the win, stopping nine of 11 shots. Ruccia took the loss, stopping 37 of 41 prior to the empty netter.
The Eagles are next in action on Tuesday night when they host the Moncton Wildcats. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.ticketmaster.ca/cape-breton-eagles-tickets/artist/891825.
