Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Isles were entering the Centre 200 in Cape Breton riding fairly high as they wrapped up a successful three-game stint to Quebec with four points. Now, they continue the road trip against a team they beat 7-2 last meeting, the Cape Breton Eagles. The Eagles, have been struggling to get in the win column this season sitting with a 4-9-3-1 record, including a loss last night at the hands of the Halifax Mooseheads. Charlottetown also got a big boost back to the lineup this evening with Ben Boyd returning for this Saturday night bout. With Oliver Satny and his league's second-best 2.17 GAA in net, it was bound to be an exciting night for Charlottetown.
The Islanders came out with energy in the first against their Maritime foes as expected after the last match-up between the two. The Isles energy atoned for seventeen opening frame shots on goal. One of those seventeen shots found the back of the net as well at 7:38 into the opening frame. Michael Horth was in the right place at the right time when a loose puck in front found its way to him and he was able to jam it into the open corner of the net for his fourth tally on the year. Assisting on the Horth goal were Keiran Gallant and Ben Boyd, marking Boyd with a point in his return to the lineup early on.
Shots through the first twenty were in the Isles favor 17-3.
The Eagles were the team getting things done quickly in the second period as it only took Kian Bell 1:43 into the frame to get on the board and tie this game at one. Helping hands on the goal were Francois-James Buteau and Lucas Canning. Just a minute and forty-five seconds later is when Ivan Ivan kept his hot play rolling. A slipup at the Isles blue line on the powerplay led to an Ivan breakaway where he went five-hole and beat Satny to put the Eagles up 2-1. Jeremy Langlois and Emile Hegarty-Aubin got the assists on this one. The Isles weren't going to let the Eagles be the ones to come away with all the glory on the penalty kill though as Sam Oliver launched his fifth on the season past Ruccia to even the game up again just 39 seconds later. Helpers were given to Michael Horth and Ben Boyd.
Shots going into the final frame were in favor of the Islanders still 32-7.
It was the Islanders this time who struck on the penalty kill when Xavier Simoneau was able to spring Lukas Cormier on a breakaway where he danced a bit with the puck before roofing one backhand on Ruccia to put the Isles back out front. The helper going to Simoneau. William Trudeau got on the score sheet at 12:12, this time on the powerplay to pot his second of the year and give the Islanders some insurance. Assisting on the goal were Jakub Brabenec and Patrick LeBlanc. Finally, with seven seconds left, it was the captain sending one into the open net to seal a 5-2 victory for Charlottetown. Assists on Budgell's goal were credited to Noah Laaoan and Keiran Gallant.
Final shots were heavily in the Islanders favor 42-11.
Three Stars of the Game:
Lukas Cormier(CHA)- Goal
Xavier Simoneau(CHA)- Assist
Nicolas Ruccia(CBE)- 37 Saves
Oliver Satny made nine stops en route to the victory and Ben Boyd had two assists in his return to the lineup. This now puts the Isles on a two-game win streak heading into Halifax tomorrow afternoon for a 3 pm puck drop.
