Cape Breton Eagles News Release

MONCTON - The Cape Breton Eagles couldn't find the back of the net in a 4-0 defeat to the Moncton Wildcats. A pair of empty netters sealed the game in favour of the home team at the Avenir Centre on Friday night.

The Eagles were unable to cash in on a pair of power play opportunities in the opening period and as a result the Wildcats left the opening frame with a 1-0 lead. Moncton got on the board when Gavin Watt, playing in his first QMJHL game, tipped a shot through traffic by Kevin Mandolese.

In the second period it was Moncton that was unable to convert on special teams, including a 1:24 long 5 on 3 towards the end of the period. However at 5 on 5 the home side would extend the lead, with Zachary L'Heureux lifting the puck over a sprawling Mandolese and under the crossbar to push the edge to 2-0.

The Eagles outshot the Wildcats 12-10 in the final frame, with perhaps the best chance coming when Liam Kidney was denied on a 2 on 0 by Charles-Antoine Lavallée. With 2:58 remaining, Cape Breton coach Jake Grimes elected to lift Mandolese for an extra attacker but not long after Moncton would clear the zone and Mika Cyr hit the empty net off the left wing.

Grimes showed faith in his offence by pulling Mandolese again for the extra attacker, but the Cats were quick to regain the Cape Breton zone. Despite the efforts of Ryan Francis to play goaltender, Philippe Daoust would bounce the puck off the Eagles forward, hitting the open goal and the score would finish 4-0.

The Eagles will finish the first half of their season when they visit the Charlottetown Islanders tomorrow night at 7 PM. You can hear all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 PM on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com
