Charlottetown Islanders News Release

Would Matthew Welsh win in his 200th career game in any other fashion?

The five-year Charlottetown Islander, becoming just the 14th goalie in QMJHL history to reach the 200 game plateau, would throw a brick wall up in net, recording 21 saves for a 5-0 defeat of the Halifax Mooseheads in his hometown.

"Tonight was a very special night for Matt Welsh and he certainly relished the moment with a rock solid 60 minute shutout." said Islanders head coach Jim Hulton on his star's performance.

Liam Peyton would kick off a large night for himself with the first goal of the game. The big winger would fly in on the rush and fire a low shot on Alexis Gravel. He'd immediately pick up the rebound and put it back on net with more success. For Peyton, that would be his fifth goal of the season.

The Isles would keep the good times rolling with a big second period; Cole Edwards would kick off the scoring in the second period with his fifth goal of the season and first since October 4th, receiving a beautiful stretch pass from Anthony Hamel and breaking in all alone on Gravel, going backhand and beating the Chicago Blackhawks prospect high to give Charlottetown a 2-0 lead.

Kevin Gursoy would extend the Isles lead to 3-0 with his tenth of the year before Peyton got back in on the action. The 19-year-old forward would be Johnny on the spot after a great move by Lukas Cormier to get the puck on goal and draw Gravel out of the net. Peyton would make no mistake for his sixth goal of the season and the first multi-goal game of his QMJHL career.

Brett Budgell would put the game on ice late in the third with his thirteenth of the season, sending the Isles back to Charlottetown with revenge from Wednesday night's game.

Brendon Clavelle added two assists in the game while Hamel, Cormier, Oscar Plandowski, Drew Johnston, Justin Gill, and Cedric Desruisseaux each added singles.

Hulton was happy to see different faces make contributions on the scoresheet.

"Finally, our offensive game had a productive night as we had many contributions throughout the lineup," Hulton said. "We'll enjoy this ride home and set our focus on finishing the first half in style on home ice tomorrow."

The Islanders will wrap up the first half of their season tomorrow night at home with a visit from the Cape Breton Eagles for the first time this season.
