The Saint John Sea Dogs improved to (16-17-1-0) after a 6-3 win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan (5-21-3-3) at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre on Friday night. Saint John is a red hot 8-2-0-0 in their last 10 games. 11 different Sea Dogs had points in the win, with all but one goal coming from a 16 or 17-year-old.
Noah Patenaude started in goal for Saint John. After a shaky start to his QMJHL career, Patenaude has been solid in his last four starts going 4-0 with just 10 goals allowed. Veteran netminder Tristan Bérubé started for the Titan.
While the Titan took the shot advantage in the first period it was the Sea Dogs capitalizing on chances.
Defenceman William Villeneuve opened the scoring when he corralled a rebound in the right circle and roofed it home for the 1-0 Sea Dogs lead. Villeneuve has had a dynamite first half of the year registering 28 points heading into Friday's game. He ranks third in points by a defender in the QMJHL.
The Sea Dogs power play got to work and it was Brady Burns netting his team leading 20th goal of the year. William Villeneuve fed Burns on the backdoor and Burns tapped the puck into the empty cage for a 2-0 Sea Dogs lead.
With less than a minute to go in the period Matt Gould took the puck up the right side and gained a stride on the Titan defender before freezing Bérubé with a forehand-backhand-forehand deke putting the Sea Dogs up 3-0. Gould has eight goals on the season.
As the horn sounded a scrum formed in the Sea Dogs zone and Jérémie Poirier was called for roughing and the Titan would start the second with a power play.
The second period was filled with penalties and chances from both ends. The Sea Dogs killed off the Poirier penalty but William Villeneuve was called for delay of game just seconds later after the puck went untouched over the glass in the defensive zone.
Just over a minute later Remy Anglehart went off for slashing and the two teams played 4-on-4 for 35 seconds. The penalty train continued shortly after both teams returned to even strength. Charlie DesRoches went off for tripping at 6:37 followed by Mathieu Desgagnes for slashing at 8:36. Neither squad could get much going with the man advantage.
At 11:41 rookie Joshua Roy scored his seventh of the year with assists going to Charlie DesRoches and James White. Roy has been finding the score sheet more and more as of late tallying eight points in the last five games.
Josh Lawrence made it 5-0 at 16:59 with assists going to fellow 17-year-olds Dawson Stairs and William Villeneuve. Lawrence has turned a corner in the last three weeks with points in seven of his last eight games. He now has 23 points on the season, five shy of the 28 he finished with in his rookie campaign.
The goals kept coming after the Sea Dogs took to the power play. Ben Badalamenti found Dawson Stairs all alone in the slot and the Frederictonian sniped home his ninth of the season to send the Sea Dogs to the dressing room up 6-0.
Felix-Anthony Ethier started the third period in net for the Titan.
Desgagnes finally got the Titan on the board and the game took a short timeout as the Bathurst fans celebrated teddy bear toss and littered the ice with stuffed toys for donation to local charities.
Joshua Roy took a delay of game penalty with seven minutes to go after his backhand clearing attempt skittered over the glass.
Saint John killed off the penalty but the Titan would add another with two minutes to go on an end-to-end effort from Desgagnes for his second of the game cutting the lead to 6-2.
The Titan added one more a minute later when Shawn Element stuffed the puck through Patenaude for your final score, 6-3 Saint John.
Noah Patenaude had another steady start for Saint John stopping 48 in the win. Ethier and Bérubé combined for 25 saves.
