Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME
-Cam Squires scored the game's opening goal and the Eagles didn't look back in a 5-0 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders. Squires added three assists to match a career high of four points.
- Lincoln Waugh scored his first career for the Eagles in the win, while Olivier Houde, Xavier Daigle, and Cam MacDonald also added tallies. Brayden Schmitt notched two assists.
- Nicolas Ruccia stopped all 27 Charlottetown shots while picking up the shutout. Aksels Ozols allowed five goals on 36 shots in the loss.
The lone marker of the opening period came at the 3:56 mark courtesy of Squires. After cutting out from the corner, his first shot was stopped by Ozols but the Eagles forward converted on his rebound to make it 1-0. Both sides failed to score on a single power play each and it was 1-0 at the first break.
The floodgates opened for the Eagles in the second period, including a power play marker to start the parade. Houde tipped a point shot from Brayden Schmitt at the 8:06 mark to push the lead to 2-0.
The trend of generating offense from the blueline continued in the middle stanza as Xavier Daigle jumped into the play and put a shot over Aksels Ozols. And before the period ended, Waugh found his first career goal- a shot through traffic that hung in the air and dropped behind by the Charlottetown goaltender.
The Eagles smothered Charlottetown in the third period, not allowing them back into the game, and outshooting the Islanders 17-3. The lone goal of the final frame came early on on the man advantage as Cam MacDonald zapped a one timer by Ozols.
The Eagles' home stand continues on Friday with the Battle Of Nova Scotia! The Mooseheads are in town for a 7 PM puck drop. It's Friday Funday at the Nest- fans can purchase four tickets for $50.
