Eagles Shutout the Isles 5-0
November 19, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
Cape Breton blanked the Islanders 5-0 on a one game road-trip.
Aksels Ozols is now 6-6 on the year stopping 31 of 36 shots.
The Eagles tested Ozols on the first play of the game, but he started strong.
Charlottetown pushed back, pressuring Eagles goaltender, Nicolas Ruccia, but they turned the puck over.
P.E.I. native Cam Squires shot it off the rush, then collected his own rebound to bury his tenth goal of the season, putting the Eagles up 1-0 under four minutes into the game.
Giovanni Morneau then went to the box for tripping, giving the Eagles the first power play of the game. The Isles' penalty kill went to work though, killing it off.
It was Charlottetown's turn on the man-advantage as Antoine Roy took a hooking penalty. Some chances were generated but Ruccia turned them away.
The Eagles took their 1-0 lead into the first intermission despite being outshot by the Islanders 11-8.
Morneau went to the box for the second time in the game, once again for tripping.
This time, Cape Breton's power play clicked. A shot on goal was tipped by Olivier Houde to double their lead to 2-0.
Then, just two minutes later, Xavier Daigle extended the Eagles lead to 3-0 shooting the puck into an empty goal.
Cole Burbidge followed the offensive push with a high-sticking penalty, giving the Islanders a chance to spark a comeback.
Alexis MIchaud had two one-time chances but both times Ruccia kept up his guard. The power play ended, as the Isles stayed cold on the man advantage.
Summerside native Lincoln Waugh then scored his first career QMJHL goal off of a strange bounce over Ozols, extending their lead to four goals.
With 40 seconds left in the frame, Kevin Walker took a tripping penalty, putting the Eagles on the power play.
Charlottetown was still leading in shots 24-19.
Walker's penalty allowed the Eagles to start the third period on the man advantage and they capitalized on their chance.
Cam MacDonald added their fifth goal of the game, beating Ozols clean. Squires had an assist on the goal for his fourth point of the game.
Cape Breton held momentum from there. The Isles were held to just one shot in the period for over 15 minutes.
The Eagles drew a 5-on-3 power play with seven minutes left in the frame. Ozols turned it back on though. He helped the Isles kill the penalty, stopping everything that came his way.
The final three minutes finally saw the push back from the Isles. Chances from Cole Huckins, Jarett Todd and Marcus Kearsey were all turned aside by Ruccia, earning a shutout.
This is the first time the Islanders have been shutout this season.
The Isles ended up being outshot 36-27 after only recording three shots in the third period. They were outhit 21-17 in the loss.
The Islanders return home to play the hottest offense in the league as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar come to town. Puck drop at the Eastlink Centre on Wednesday, Nov, 22 is at 7:00 p.m.
