Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME - Goals from Jacob Newcombe early in the first and third periods helped paced the Eagles to a 5-0 victory over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada Saturday night. Cam Squires & William Shields also scored in the win, while Charles Boutin scored and added an assist.
- Nicolas Ruccia picked up his second career shutout, stopping all 30 shots in the win, while Nicholas Sheehan allowed four goals on 28 shots in addition to anb mpty netter.
- It was the first game back as a visiting player in Blainville-Boisbriand for Boutin, along with Antoine Roy & Brayden Schmitt following trades from the Armada to the Eagles. Former Armada defenseman Brayden Schmitt missed the game with an injury, while the Eagles were also without forward Ivan Ivan who was serving a one game suspension.
The Eagles got the start they were looking for as Jacob Newcombe handcuffed Nicholas Sheehan with a shot off the right wing, scoring just 35 seconds into the period on the first shot of the night. Both teams had a late power play in the opening frame but neither could score, and the Eagles led 1-0 after 20 minutes.
After the five-minute mark in the second stanza the Eagles added to the lead thanks to a three on one rush. Olivier Houde dropped the puck to Cam Squires who beat Sheehan to make it 2-0. The Armada hoped to close the gap on the power play late in the period, but former Armada forward Charles Boutin, making his return to his former home, raced in on a breakaway and backhanded the Eagles into a 3-0 lead. The Eagles killed the rest of the Luke Patterson minor and the score held at the intermission.
In the opening minute of the third period, Newcombe found a way to one-up his first period strike. Coming up the opposite wing this time, he fired a shot by Sheehan just 18 seconds into period to give the Eagles a 4-0 edge.
With over seven minutes to go and his team unable to score, Armada coach Bruce Richardson elected to lift his goaltender for an extra attacker. The gamble did not pay off as Eagles forward William Shields scored from his own end. The Eagles held the fort for the remainder of the game, securing the second career shutout for Nicolas Ruccia and a 5-0 victory.
The Eagles will resume their road trip Wednesday night in Val-d'Or against the Foreurs. Puck drop is 8 PM Atlantic time.
