Eagles Begin Road Trip with Loss in Halifax

March 4, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

NOTES FROM THE GAME - A trio of Mooseheads forwards Josh Lawrence, Jordan Dumais, and Mathieu Cataford had two goal games in a 6-1 win over the Cape Breton Eagles on Saturday in Halifax.

- The Eagles goal was a power play marker by Cam Squires to break the shutout in the third period. The goal was Squires's 50th point of the season.

- Nicolas Ruccia took the loss in the Eagles net, stopping 15 of 19 shots before being relieved by Oliver Satny who stopped 13 of 15 shots.

The Eagles started strong and had chances earlier but it was the Mooseheads jumping out to the early lead, as Lawrence put a shot through traffic before the four minute mark. Lawrence thought he had scored on an ensuing power play, but the goal was waived off due to goaltender interference. However, Dumais ripped a shot from the right faceoff circle just under the crossbar on the same man advantage and Halifax took a 2-0 edge. At the end of the opening period the shots were 14-13 in favour of Halifax and the Mooseheads led 2-0 after killing a high sticking double minor to Cataford.

Before the halfway mark of regulation the Mooseheads had doubled their lead. First it was Cataford, scoring on a rebound from the left side of the net. Then, Dumais notched another power play goal, spelling the end of the night for Ruccia.

The Eagles had a chance to break the shutout when a Jacob Newcombe shot rung off the post but it stayed out. In the final two minutes of the period, a Jake Furlong shot hit the iron as well, and Lawrence was there to cash in to put the home side up 5-0.

The teams traded power play markers in the third period- Squires breaking the shutout on a nice passing play from Newcombe, before Cataford split the defense for a nice individual effort to score the game's final goal.

The Eagles continue their road trip tomorrow afternoon in Saint John against the Sea Dogs. Puck drop is 3 PM Atlantic time. The game is available for purchase online at https://bit.ly/3KSz0k9.
