Colorado Eagles News Release

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles beat the Arizona Sundogs 3-2 tonight, as the home team continued to win every game in the history of the series. Despite again being short-handed much more often than the Sundogs, Colorado's penalty-killers stood strong, keeping the league's second ranked power play in check six out of seven times.

The first period of this year's third meeting between these two teams saw the continuation of one trend and the ending of another. The Arizona Sundogs continued to get power play after power play, but the Eagles were able to keep them from converting on all but one of them. The Sundogs were awarded five power plays in the first period -- giving them a 22-11 advantage in power plays through two games, an overtime period and the first period of this game -- but the Eagles' penalty killing units held the Sundogs to only one goal. For Colorado, Ryan Tobler got the scoring started when he converted from Brad Williamson and Ed McGrane (on a delayed penalty call) just 1:26 in. The score remained the same until about 10 minutes (and three Eagles' penalties) later, when Rob Lehtinen scored the aforementioned power play goal (Chris Bartolone, Alex Leavitt).

At 4:36 into the second period, Arizona's Karl Sellan put the Sundogs on top, 2-1, when he scored from the middle of the slot (Tyler Redenbach, Sean Sullivan). The period continued without a Colorado power play -- despite Greg Pankewicz getting drilled behind the net with no call, Dave Iannazzo getting punched in the face after a whistle with no call and Clayton Pool getting run over in his crease with no call -- until 11:47 when the Sundogs' Chris Greene was whistled for hooking. The Eagles proved opportunistic when Riley Nelson scored his first goal of the season on a feed from Pankewicz and Aaron Schneekloth, tying the game at two.

In the final period, the contest proved to be like every other one between these two teams this year -- a one-goal game -- and like every one between these two teams in history as the home team left the building victorious. Just two minutes into the third, Pankewicz came roaring down the left-wing boards and fed a pass to Nelson who was streaking down the slot. Nelson softly slid the puck through Zaniboni's 5-hole for the second Nelson-from-Pankewicz power play goal of the game (and the game-winner), and the Sundogs' first loss of the season.
