Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas came up short against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Friday night, bringing their season record to 0-3-1 to start the 07-08 campaign. Once again, the Gorillas played a very strong contest, out-shooting the Bees 48-29 but came away empty-handed losing by a final score of 2-3. The Gorillas were hard work created 13 power play opportunities, but they managed to convert only one. The 13 power plays given up by the Bees tied a franchise record for power plays allowed on home ice.
Things looked to be going the Gorillas way early, as Chris Lipsett got his second goal of the season early at the 1:04 mark, following up a rebound off of Chris Martini's stick. Rio Grande answered back with a goal from Josh Bonar at 3:14 of the period, one of two power play goals the Gorillas would give up in the first. Newcomer Grant Selinger made his mark early as well, putting the Gorillas back on top 2-1 with a goal at the 8:26 mark, ripping a rebound past David Lemanowicz. Selinger's goal would be the last of the night for the Gorillas however, as Lemanowicz went on to shut the door turning aside 46 of the 48 shots he faced. Before the period ended, Ray Voltera would add the Bees second power play goal at the 15:24 mark, and despite out-shooting the Bees 18-8 in the period, Amarillo found themselves tied at 2 after the period.
In the second frame, Rio Grande got another lift from ther Captain, as Voltera scored his second at 6:42, with helpers given to David Masse and Mike Looby. Rio Grande took the lead 3-2 and would ride their hot goaltender all the way to the final whistle.
In the third period, Amarillo would see many opportunities to score the equalizer, getting 6 power plays in the final frame. As regulation ticked down, the Gorillas found themselves on the power play again, and pulled goaltender Dan McWhinney for the final minute to make it a 6 on 4 advantage. They were able to win faceoffs and set up in their offensive end time after time, but just couldn't find a solution for goaltender David Lemanowicz, who was named the number one star of the game.
Amarillo will travel to Laredo to take on the Bucks tomorrow night, and the broadcast will once again be carried on 99.7 FM, which is a change from the usual spot on 1010 AM The Canyon.
