Kingsport Axmen News Release
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (August 2, 2014) - A season-high crowd of 2,919 couldn't propel the Kingsport Mets to victory in a pivotal game on Saturday night. The Elizabethton Twins won the rubber game of this Appalachian League series at Hunter Wright Stadium, holding Kingsport to five hits in a 4-0 shutout.
Sam Gibbons (3-2) and Randy Leblanc combined on the shutout for the Twins (25-17), which continues to lead the West Division. Kingsport falls five games back with this loss.
Elizabethton took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Tyler Kuresa had all three of his team's RBIs, also delivering a two-run single in the third inning that closed scoring. Elizabethton's second run in the first inning scored on a throwing error by Kingsport starter Blake Taylor on a first-inning play that didn't lack controversy.
On the preceding pitch, Twins batter Tanner Vavra fouled off Taylor's offering. When Taylor stepped back on the mound, Elizabethton runner Tanner English broke from second base to third, and Taylor's throw sailed high and wide. Kingsport manager Jose Leger argued that live play hadn't resumed, but to no avail.
Jermias Pineda and Nick Gordon had two hits apiece and combined to score three runs in the top two spots in the lineup. Gordon also played some fantastic defense at shortstop.
Kingsport was good in the field as well, turning three double plays, all of which saw K-Mets shortstop Luis Guillorme as the catalyst. The K-Mets' five hits were distributed evenly up and down the lineup, and all were singles except for an eighth-inning double by catcher Jose Garcia.
Kingsport comes back home Aug. 7 to face the Bristol Pirates. The action starts at 5 p.m., as the completion of a suspended game that began in Bristol will be played, followed by a full nine-inning game.
K-METRIC: Kingsport didn't put multiple base runners on in an inning until the ninth, when Oswald Caraballo and Pedro Perez singled back-to-back with the K-Mets down to their final out.
NOTES: The K-Mets made a handful of moves after Friday's doubleheader, adding catcher Luis Arrizurieta and right-handed pitcher Audry German to the roster. Pitcher Martires Arias, who had a league-low 0.50 ERA, was promoted to Brooklyn. The Mets sent pitcher Connor Buchmann and catcher Miguel Leal down to the Gulf Coast League. ... Christian Montgomery looked sharp out of the bullpen for Kingsport, throwing perfect eighth and ninth innings. ... Taylor (2-1) struggled, allowing four runs-three earned-on five hits and four walks over four innings.
