Greeneville, TN - The Bristol Pirates (13-29) jumped out to an early lead and held on to defeat the Greeneville Astros (23-21), 4-2, on Sunday night at Pioneer Park. Although the Astros outhit the Pirates, 9-4, they were unable to score crucial runs when they needed them most.
The Pirates took the lead in the game right from the start. With two outs in the top of the first, Trae Arbet's eighth double of the season plated two runs.
In the second inning, Nathan Tomaszewski drew a leadoff walk for the Pirates. Then, on a Tomas Morales sacrifice bunt, an errant throw to first by the Astros allowed Tomaszewski to head all the way around for a score to make it 3-0.
After just one hit through the first two innings for the Astros, they did manage to cut into the Pirates lead in the third inning. With runners on first and third, the Astros pulled off a double steal as Kristian Trompiz headed home for a score while Edwin Medina went to second. Then, after Medina stole third as well, he scored on an Antonio Nunez sacrifice fly.
The score remained 3-2 in favor of the Pirates over the next four innings. However, the Astros missed a chance to even the game in the bottom of the seventh.
After a leadoff single by Edwin Medina, he was caught in a rundown while stealing. Then, the Astros got consecutive singles from Jason Martin and Antonito Nunez before a balk advanced them to second and third.
Had the leadoff runner not been thrown out, the Astros could have tied the game there. However, with one out, they still had a chance before a pop out and ground out from the next two batters ended the inning without a score.
In the eighth inning, the Pirates got an insurance run on a one-out solo homer from Chris Harvey to increase their lead to 4-2. They would need no more as the Astros went three-up, three-down in each of the final two innings to end the game.
Despite the loss, the Astros are 5-2 against the Pirates on the season.
Pirates' reliever John Sever (1-1) had six strikeouts and held the Astros scoreless on five hits over 4.1 innings of work to pick up the win. Then, Luis Paula retired the side in the ninth to earn his first save.
The Astros face the Pirates in game two of their three-game series on Monday at Pioneer Park. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
