Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
HIDALGO, TX: July 14, 2004 â The arenafootball2's Rio Grande Valley Dorados are happy to announce the return of lineman Ricardo Dyson's helmet, which was stolen after Saturday night's 51-44 victory over the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. The Dorados also welcome back defensive specialist Jimel Cofer, who is assigned to the Dorados roster to fill the vacancy opened up by the injury of defensive specialist Nicholas Davis.
Davis broke his humerus (bone that extends from the shoulder to the elbow) Saturday night and has been placed on the season-long injured reserve list. On Monday, Davis underwent a three hour procedure performed at Rio Grande Regional by Team Physician Kip Owen MD of Pro-Active Orthopedic. The Pompano Beach, Florida native had his fracture reset and had a steel rod placed in to keep the bone in place. Davis was released from the hospital yesterday and his left arm will take an estimated 4-6 months to recover. He leaves the Dorados active roster leading the squad in tackles with 53, 45 of them are solo tackles to lead the team in that department. The af2 rookie also led the team in pass break-ups with 19.
Ironically for the returning Cofer, his last game played for the Dorados was at Tulsa, where he had 3 tackles and 2 pass deflections. In seven games with the Dorados, the 6'2" 195-pound defensive specialist tallied 14 tackles (11 solo) and had 10 pass deflections. The Hollywood, Florida native and Michigan State product also has one forced fumble on the season and has played 9 games over three seasons in his af2 career.
Dyson's helmet returned to the Dorados yesterday afternoon after it was brought back by a local citizen. A gentleman who claims to have brought a large group to the game apparently opened his front door to leave to work, only to find Dyson's helmet on his porch. He does not know who had it or placed it on his property, but figures that news about the loss of Dyson's helmet through the local media scared whoever had it. Dyson was happy to be reunited with his XXL helmet during this morning's practice. The 6'4" 350-pound lineman has 4 tackles (3 solo) and 2 sacks, including a forced fumble and recovery, in seven games with the Dorados this season and moved into the starting role at center two weeks ago. The Dorados thank local media members and individuals that assisted in the return of Dyson's helmet.
In the meantime, the Dorados are currently preparing for their Saturday night contest in Tulsa against the Tulsa Talons. The Talons won the previous meeting 45-35 at the Dodge Arena on June 12th and they defeated the Dorados in Tulsa on May 28th in a game the Dorados had a chance to tie in the closing seconds, but McKinley Bowie fumbled a rushing attempt at the one yard line. Tulsa is currently the top team in the National Conference's Southwest Division with a 10-3 record and they have won 7 straight. The Dorados have won 2 straight and the word "playoffs" has re-entered their vocabulary. The Dorados are currently tied with Green Bay (5-8) for the tenth conference seed with a 5-8 record and would need to leapfrog Hawaii (7-6), Peoria (7-6), Wichita (7-6) and San Diego (6-7) in the final three weeks of the season. Playoff tie-breakers and information can be explained in detail on page 4 of the arenafootball2 Record and Fact Book or by contacting arenafootball2 Media Services Manager Ron Deuter at 312-621-7804.
Rio Grande Valley returns home for their regular season home finale on July 24th against the Arkansas Twisters.
