Pioneers No. 1 in Week 16 Poll
July 14, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - By a 14-point margin over division rival Cape Fear, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers earned the No. 1 position in the Week 16 Coaches' Poll, the league office announced today. This is fifth time this season that the Pioneers have held the No. 1 spot in the poll. They were last ranked No. 1 in Week 13.
The Pioneers received 267 points including 15 first-place votes. The second place Wildcats earned 253 points and seven first-place votes. In the third spot was the Tulsa Talons with 243 points and the other three first-place votes. The Tennessee Valley Vipers came in at No. 4 with 181 points.
Along with the Wildcats and Vipers, three other teams moved up the rankings in Week 16. The Florida Firecats jumped from ninth to sixth, the Louisville Fire went from 10th to ninth and the Peoria Pirates cracked into the Top 12 for the first time since Week 2. The Pirates took the 11th spot.
There is only one game among Top 12 teams this week, as the No. 10 Quad City Steamwheelers host the No. 5 Birmingham Steeldogs on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
