Right-handed pitcher Dwayne Pollok was named the Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month for August, it was announced today by the league office.
In addition, center fielder Jerry Owens was selected by member clubs as co-Player of the Month, sharing the honor with Sugar Land first baseman/outfielder Aaron Bates.
Pollok won all six of his starts during the month and compiled a 1.77 ERA. The Texas native won his 18th game of the season on Saturday, August 31, tying the league's single-season mark, previously established by Dan Reichert with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in 2010. Pollok has won his last ten starts and his last 12 decisions. He has thrown 12 consecutive quality starts and currently leads the Atlantic League with a 2.92 ERA.
Owens batted .387 for the Month of August and added ten stolen bases to his total. The Barnstormers leadoff man has a 28-point edge in the batting race with a .347 mark, nine points ahead of the Barnstormers franchise record, and is currently tied for second in the circuit with 32 steals.
"I am extremely happy for both gentlemen," said manager Butch Hobson. "Pollok has not just had an outstanding month; he has had an outstanding season. Owens has been a great table setter for us."
Pollok is scheduled to start on Thursday evening against Somerset. He is slated to start two games on the team's final road trip of the season as he pursues becoming the first Atlantic League pitcher to win 20 games in a season. No pitcher has accomplished the feat in the minor leagues since 1992.
The Lancaster Barnstormers are in their ninth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
