December 9, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - The Everett Silvertips (@WHLSilvertips), seven-time U.S. Division champion and two-time Western Conference champion of the Western Hockey League, announced today that goaltender Dustin Wolf has been named one of 28 players to USA Hockey's preliminary roster for the upcoming 2020 World Junior Championships, Dec. 26 - Jan. 5 in Ostrava and Trinec, Czech Republic.
Wolf will be competing for one of 23 final roster spots for the tournament, with Team USA holding their training camp Dec. 16-17 in Plymouth, Mich. before travel to Czech Republic for pre-tournament competition. Team USA is expected to announce the final roster by Dec. 24, and unveiled their preliminary camp roster on NHL Network today.
Team USA is led by general manager John Vanbiesbrouck and coaching staff: head coach Scott Sandelin, and assistant coaches David Lassonde, Steve Miller, Brett Larson, and Jerry Keefe.
Wolf, 18, is the WHL leader in save percentage (.943) and shutouts (5), also ranking second in goals-against-average (1.86), and tied for second in wins (16) with a 16-6-0-0 record in 22 games. The native of Tustin, Calif. was selected by the Calgary Flames in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and was named WHL Vaughn Goaltender of the Month on Oct. 31 with a CHL-leading .945 save percentage, and two shutouts in 10 games.
"We were able to assemble a roster with great balance of youth and experience and we're thrilled with the potential of this group," said Vanbiesbrouck. "We had a deep player pool to select from, and that's credit to all the organizations and volunteers developing the next wave of U.S. hockey stars. I know [head coach] Scott Sandelin and his staff are excited to bring these players together at camp as we begin the challenge of creating a final roster that will give us the best chance to bring home a gold medal."
Wolf last season was named WHL Western Conference Goaltender of the Year, CHL Scholastic Player of the Year, Silvertips Most Dedicated Player, and recipient of the Silvertips Community Relations, and Scholastic Player of the Year awards. In 2018-19, he broke the Silvertips record and led the WHL in wins (41), also leading the league in save percentage (.936), goals-against-average (1.69), and minutes (3,615). He was named WHL Western Conference first team All-Star last season, also suiting up for Team USA this summer at the World Junior Summer Showcase.
Wolf's 16 shutouts are third in Silvertips all-time history and is 70-27-2-2 with a .936 save percentage and a 1.83 goals-against-average in 103 career games.
Team USA, skating in training camp for the event last December in downtown Everett, has medaled in four straight tournaments and last season earned the silver medal in competition at Victoria and Vancouver.
All Team USA games for the 2020 World Junior Championships will be carried live in the United States on NHL Network (check local listings).
