GAME RECAP: WINTERHAWKS 4 COUGARS 1

PORTLAND, OR- The Portland Winterhawks took all four games this week against the Prince George Cougars after their 4-1-win Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in downtown Portland.

Josh Maser scored a power-play early in the second period for the Cougars but that was all the offence they could muster against Joel Hofer and the Winterhawks. 16-year-old rookie Tyler Brennan made his fourth start and turned aside 29 of 32 shots. 15-year-old signed prospect Koehn Ziemmer impressed in his WHL debut, as he finished with one shot on a net.

Johnny Ludvig, Robbie Fromm-Delorme, Jaydon Dureau, and Seth Jarvis scored for Portland. Hofer earned his 20th win of the season and his fourth this week against the Cougars.

Ludvig opened the scoring in the first period, scoring eight and half minutes into the game. Ludvig, the Portland captain, took a drop pass from Tyson Kozak and scored over Brennan's glove at 8:24.

The score remained 1-0 until the opening moments of the second period. On a power-play that carried over from the first, the Cougars tied the game 1-1 after Maser redirected Cole Moberg's one-timer. Maser bagged his team-best 13th of the season just over 90-seconds into the frame.

The Cougars had a huge push at the start of the second, outshooting the Winterhawks 10-0 in the first seven-minutes. However, the home team scored twice in five-minutes to go up by two.

12-seconds after Portland got their first shot of the middle frame, Fromm-Delorme chipped in his own rebound to put the Winterhawks up 2-1 at 7:19. Then, on a power-play, Jaydon Dureau scored off the rush from the left-wing less than five-minutes after Fromm-Delorme's goal as the Winterhawks led 3-1 through 40-minutes.

Portland put the finishing touches on their fourth-straight win with an empty-net goal by Seth Jarvis with half a minute left in the third period.

Game Notes: Prince George's winless streak stretched to five games (0-4-1-0) with the setback. Their last win came November 23rd versus Kelamloops. The Cougars' road record slipped to 2-10-0-1 with Sunday's loss. Koehn Ziemmer made his WHL debut on his 15th birthday. Sunday was Tyler Brennan's first start since November 16th in Langley against the Vancouver Giants. Ethan Browne (illness), Blake Eastman (injured), Vladislav Mikhalchuk, and Keaton Dowhaniuk (AP) did not dress.

Next Up: The Cougars (6-20-0-2) return home for a weekend doubleheader against the Victoria Royals on December 13th & 14th; both games are scheduled for 7:00 pm. Saturday, December 14th is the team's annual Teddy & Toque Toss sponsored by Northland Dodge. Fans are encouraged to bring a new stuff toyed or warm winter clothing, to the game to throw onto the ice when the Cougars' score their first goal.
