Dust Devils Take Season Opening Series

In the only day game of the season the Tri-City Dust Devils defeated the defending Northwest League Champion Everett AquaSox 4-3. They also won their season opening series three games to two in front of a crowd of 1,433 at Gesa Stadium Tuesday.

Dust Devils (3-2) starter Nelson Gonzalez went five innings in his first start of the season, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four and not allowing a walk. Reliever Kenneth Roberts (1-0) earned the win, going 1 1/3 innings of relief. In that time he allowed just one hit and kept his season earned run average at 0.00.

Everett (2-3) starter Bennett Whitmore looked great in his 2011 debut, also going five innings and allowing just one run on two hits. He also struck out five and walked one batter and now has an earned run average of 1.80. Getting the loss for the AquaSox was reliever Nolan Diaz (0-1). Diaz worked two innings directly after Whitmore and allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits.

Dust Devils outfielder Leo Reyes had his second consecutive multi-hit game Tuesday, going 2-for-4 and improving his season batting average to .333. Tri-City infielder David Hernandez also kept his hot hitting alive, going 1-for-3 and driving in a run. He is now batting .500 on the year.

Tri-City will now try and take their second straight series win on the year as they head to Boise for a three game series with the Hawks. The Dust Devils will be back at Gesa Stadium to face those same Boise Hawks on June 28th, which is Social Media Night.
