Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - Jaydon Dureau tallied his 22nd goal of the year at 2:22 of overtime to help the Winterhawks top the Blazers 5-4 in a thrilling battle at the Sandman Centre.
On a rush with Robbie Fromm-Delorme and Ryan McCleary, Dureau took Fromm-Delorme's pass at the blue line and slowed up, allowing his teammates to push back the defense of the Blazers, before unleashing a lethal wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circles into the top left corner for the win in the extra stanza.
Before the teams traded punch after punch throughout the 60-plus minutes, the game was all Kamloops at the outset as Logan Stankoven netted his first of two tallies just 57 seconds into the contest, his 100th point of the season. But Portland weathered the early storm and responded with two goals - both breakaways - before the end of the frame. Cross Hanas first leveled the score with his 26th of the year midway through the period, and Marcus Nguyen gave the Hawks the lead at 16:57 with a shorthanded strike.
Stankoven remained dangerous in the second period and lit the lamp once more to tie things up on the power play at 10:23, but Portland again secured an intermission advantage in the final minute of the frame as Luca Cagnoni netted his ninth of the season. Cagnoni capitalized on a loose puck after Jack O'Brien's power move at the side of the net sent the biscuit through a sea of bodies in front to the waiting Cagnoni in the slot.
Things got spicy in the third period when Kamloops jumped out to an early lead behind two goals from Caedan Bankier and Reese Belton. Bankier's tally knotted things up at 3:19 before Belton's attempted dump-in took an odd bounce and somehow found its way to the back of the net at 3:53. Chasing a goal, Marek Alscher came through for the Hawks five minutes later with a laser from the left-side circle to eventually force overtime, where Dureau sealed up two points for Portland.
Taylor Gauthier turned aside 31 of 35 shots for the win. The Winterhawks now head to Kennewick to take on the Tri-City Americans on Tuesday.
