Rochester Red Wings News Release
J.D. Durbin struck out six in 6 2/3 innings, and Pat Neshek finished off the combined effort shutout as the Red Wings beat the Buffalo Bisons 3-0 Tuesday night at Frontier Field. Josh Rabe and Luis Maza each drove in runs for Rochester.
Terry Tiffee hit a one-out double off starter Fausto Carmona in the the Red Wings' second inning, then Rabe reached on an error by shortstop Ivan Ochoa, With runners on first and third, Maza hit a single to score Tiffee to lead the Red Wings 1-0 at the bottom of the second.
In the bottom of the third, Andres Torres led off for Rochester with a single and an error on Bisons left fielder Jason Dubois. With a wild pitch by Carmona, Torres advanced to third base. Jason Kubel hit a ground ball out to first to plate Torres and put the Wings up 2-0. Both runs were unearned.
Durbin, who hasn't much luck or success at home (6.75 ERA at Frontier, 0.90 ERA in his road starts) allowed just a hit and a walk through the first five innings. With two outs and Franklin Gutierrez on first base in the sixth inning, a stolen base and throwing error combo moved Gutierrez to third base. But Durbin retired cleanup hitter Ryan Garko on a chopper that Durbin scooped up and fired to first for the third out.
Rabe knocked in Tiffee with an RBI single in the sixth to put the Wings ahead 3-0.
Durbin started the seventh with a strikeout, but gave up three singles around a great catch by Rabe to load the bases with two outs. Manager Stan Cliburn brought in closer Pat Neshek to Gutierrez, and a fly out to right field ended the inning and the threat. Durbin finished with a worksheet that showed 6 2/3 scoreless innings and five hits, with a pair of walks and a season-high six strikeouts.
Neshek closed out the game and picked up his fourth save, allowing a hit and striking out three.
