DUNEDIN - After a seven inning pitchers duel the Dunedin Blue Jays (23-19) showed their power in the later innings and squeaked past the Daytona Cubs (18-24), 2-1 to earn the sweep over Daytona.

Cubs starter Jay Jackson went seven innings, allowed just two hits and struck out four. Jackson faced the minimum through seven innings thanks to the help of his defense. The Cubs defense turned a double play in the second, and Cubs catcher Luis Flores threw out two runners in the third, which accounted for all the baserunners that reached against Jackson.

Dunedin's Ryan Page (8-11) threw eight innings and gave up just one unearned run on seven hits and struck out five.

The Cubs had opportunites early, but could not come up with a timely hit as they left six runners on base through the first five innings. The Blue Jays defense also played a big role early, as they threw out two Cubs attempting to score from third base.

After numerous opportunities the Cubs broke through in the eigth. With one out, Tony Campana singled to left field. Campana then attempted to steal second and Page caught him out of the corner of his eye, but his pickoff attempt was wild to first baseman Manny Rodriguez which allowed Campana to get to third. Cubs manager Buddy Bailey then got creative as he had Nate Samson lay down a squeeze bunt that worked to perfection, as Campana came into score the first run of the game.

The Blue Jays answered back in the bottom half of the eigth. Cubs reliever Dan McDaniel (5-9) came in for Jackson and struck out the first two in the inning. After a walk to Jon Jaspe, McDaniel had Jesus Gonzalez down 0-2 in the count but grooved a changeup to Gonzalez and he hit a two run home run to give the Blue Jays the lead. Gonzalez now has twelve long balls on the year.

Tim Collins came in with two on and one out and struck out Jonathan Wyatt to end the game and pick up his third save of the year.

The Cubs return home to start a six game homestand that kicks off with three games against the first place Tampa Yankees beginning Tuesday, August 11 at 7:05 p.m. The gates will open a 6:00 p.m.
