Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers got two great performances from their franchise player and franchise pitcher as they hammered the Orange County Flyers 14-2 at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California. Carlos Duncan had a monster game going four-for-five with two homeruns, eight runs batted in and three runs scored. Meanwhile starter Evan Greusel (7-2) tossed a complete game for the victory while only giving up six hits and striking out six as well. With the victory the Snakes take over top spot overall in the Golden Baseball League with a 36-23 record. Calgary's record in the second half improves to 10-5 after the victory in the first half of a double-header.

Calgary put up a run on the scoreboard for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a Jorge Mejia walk, singles by Carlos Duncan and Felix Jose, and a Drew Miller sacrifice fly.

In the top of the second the Vipers added to their lead with a Patrick Arlis double, Colin Moro single, and Darryl Brinkley run batted in groundout. Following another Mejia walk Duncan smacked a three run blast, his fourth of the season, for the 5-0 advantage.

Orange County got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning as Patrick Breen smacked a two run big fly for the 5-2 score.

The game was put away in the top of the sixth frame with four more runs and a 9-2 lead as Duncan knocked in Moro and Mejia who had singled and walked and Miller picked up another RBI with a base hit.

Duncan was back at it again in the seventh inning with his second three run homerun of the game. Moro and Jorge Tang started the inning with singles and Mejia cashed a run with a base knock before Duncan's fifth long ball of the year. Following a Miller double Nelson Castro made the score 14-2 with a RBI single. Moro, the Calgary native, ended the night going four-for-four with two runs scored.

In the back half of the twin bill Nate Melek (4-3) will toe the rubber.

The Vipers now have a big weekend planned against their arch-rival the Edmonton Cracker-Cats when they return to Foothills Stadium on August 1st at 7:05 PM (MDT). Friday night will be Vipers Key Chain Giveaway Night with the first 1500 fans receiving that gift. Saturday the Vipers and Calgary Stampeders are teaming up for a baseball-football doubleheader.
