Chico Outlaws News Release
RENO, NV - For six-and-a-third innings, Reno right-hander Derrick Landavazo was nearly perfect against his former team, the Chico Outlaws...but a dropped fly ball with two outs in the 7th paved the way for the Outlaws to plate eight unearned runs in the frame and go on to defeat the Silver Sox 9-5 Tuesday night at Peccole Park on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. The win evened the five game series between the Outlaws and Silver Sox at one apiece.
Tuesday's scheduled doubleheader was trimmed back to a single regulation nine-inning game due to a sewage back-up at Peccole Park, but the problem was taken care of well before the first pitch. Landavazo and Outlaws starter Berek Fasking matched each other zero for zero through the first three innings, but in the 4th Reno broke through with an unearned run - Gary Harris reached on an error by Chico catcher Matt Ceriani, went to second on a bunt single by Carlos Madrid, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on John Hattig's sacrifice fly to center. In the 5th the Silver Sox went up 3-0 courtesy of a two-run double by Adam Geery. Landavazo, meanwhile, did not allow a hit through the first six innings, walking just two and facing one batter over the minimum.
Landavazo got the first out in the 7th, but following a walk to Casey Garrison, Jose Valdez broke up the no-hit bid with a bloop single down the left field line. Shane Cronin struck out, and Tony Torcato followed with a routine fly ball to right field. Juan Senreiso tried to make a snatch catch and dropped the ball...so instead of Reno heading back to the dugout with their 3-0 lead intact, Garrison and Valdez both scored on the miscue to pull Chico to within one. Following an intentional walk and a wild pitch to put runners at second and third, Ceriani lined a single to center to plate both Torcato and Gabe Riley and give the Outlaws a 4-3 lead. Back-to-back singles by Eric Pringle and Steve Boggs produced another run...then left fielder Ross McCoy misplayed a Jesse Kovacs fly ball into a two-run double to make it 7-3. Garrison capped off the 7th inning rally with an RBI single to make the score 8-3, and in the 8th Chico would go up 9-3 when Pringle's single to center drove home Torcato from second. Fasking, tiring in the 8th, gave up a pair of runs as Reno pulled to within four...but Todd Gelatka came in from the Chico bullpen to retire the Silver Sox in order in the 9th to lock down just the Outlaws seventh road victory in 29 tries this season.
Fasking (2-3) went seven-and-two-thirds innings to pick up his first victory since June 21st...Landavazo (1-1) suffered the hard-luck loss. The Outlaws had eight hits on the night, with Pringle going 2-for-4...the Silver Sox had just six hits, with D.J. Dixon banging out a single and a double in three official at-bats. Tuesday's win improved Chico's second half record to 5-8 and overall mark to 20-35...Reno dropped to 4-7 in the second half and 22-33 for the season. The two teams will play two seven inning games Wednesday, with Eric Sheridan (0-1 with Chico, 1-3 overall) and Scott Navarro (1-2) on the mound for the Outlaws. Game one of the twinbill will start at 5:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
