Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., May 21, 2008) - The Long Island Ducks split their doubleheader against the Camden Riversharks on Wednesday. The Ducks won the first game 3-2 on a dramatic home run by Estee Harris. The Sharks claimed the nightcap 6-3 behind a six run outburst in the third inning.
Camden held a 2-0 lead into the latter frames of the evening's first seven-inning contest. Long Island finally got to Riversharks starter Ryan Drese in the fifth when Estee Harris led off with a single and was doubled home two batters later by P.J. Rose. In the bottom of the sixth, Dennis Donovan drove a two-out single to left to keep the inning alive for Harris. The Central Islip native then launched a two-run homer over the wall in right to give the Ducks their first lead of the game.
The homer came off of Riversharks reliever Julio Guerrero (3-1), who had earned two victories over Long Island last week at Campbell's Field. Jon Asahina (1-0) picked up the win. Joe Valentine came on in the ninth to notch his fifth save of the season.
The Ducks kept the momentum going through the first inning of the second game. Long Island plated two runs on a single by Carl Everett to grab the early lead. But the Riversharks rallied with six runs on six hits in the third, pulling ahead by four and chasing Ducks starter Randy Leek.
Camden made the lead stand up, as Brian Lawrence (2-1) settled in to allow just three runs on eight hits over six innings to pick up the win. Leek (1-1) was dealt the loss. Alec Zumwalt earned his seventh save of the year with a perfect seventh inning.
Offensively, the Ducks were sparked by newcomer Alex Sanchez, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in his Long Island debut. Everett had two RBI in the nightcap, while Harris went 2-for-4 in the first game. Chris Walker socked a two-run homer of his own for Camden in game two, and L.J. Biernbaum picked up three hits over the two ballgames for the visitors.
The Ducks finish their four-game set with the Riversharks on Thursday. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m., and the Citibank Park gates open at 5:35 p.m. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive 20 oz. sport bottles, courtesy of British Airways.
