Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 13, 2015) - The Long Island Ducks split a single-admission doubleheader with the Sugar Land Skeeters on Sunday afternoon, winning 2-0 in game one before falling 6-2 in game two at Bethpage Ballpark.
In game one, the Ducks got the scoring started in the third on a RBI single from Mike Blanke off Skeeters starter Josh Geer. One inning later, Elmer Reyes' solo homer to left made it 2-0 Ducks.
That was all the offensive support Ducks starter John Brownell needed. The righty pitched all seven innings to complete the Long Island victory.
Brownell (12-5) picked up the win. He allowed just four hits in seven shutout innings while walking one and striking out eight. Geer (6-8) suffered the loss, giving up two runs on seven hits in five innings. He walked and struck out two.
Long Island also opened the scoring in game two of the doubleheader. In the first, Randy Ruiz picked up a RBI on a fielder's choice off Sugar Land starter Kelvin Villa. Cody Puckett brought in a run in the same fashion in the second. The Skeeters got on the scoreboard in the third when Chris Wallace hit a RBI single to right off Ducks starter Ian Marshall.
Travis Scott's solo homer in the fifth tied the game at two. The Skeeters then posted four runs in the seventh off Ducks reliever Amalio Diaz to take a 6-2 lead. A two-run single from Johan Limonta highlighted the inning. The Ducks could not respond.
Diaz (1-4) suffered the loss. He allowed four runs on two hits and walked three without recording an out in the seventh. Andrew Johnston (3-2) was the winner for Sugar Land, allowing one hit in one scoreless inning of relief in the sixth. Both starters took no decisions. Marshall allowed two runs on eight hits in four and two-thirds innings while walking one and striking out three. Villa also allowed two runs, giving up five hits and striking out one in five frames.
Long Island now travels to Pennsylvania to begin a three-game set with the York Revolution. First pitch for Monday's series opener is scheduled for 6:30 from Santander Stadium. Fans can follow all of the action live on the Ducks' official YouTube channel. Live streaming audio will be available online.
Upon securing a playoff berth, the Ducks would host Games One and Two of the best-of-five Liberty Division Championship Series against the Somerset Patriots on Wednesday, September 23 and Thursday, September 24. Should they advance, the Ducks would host Games One and Two of the best-of-five Atlantic League Championship Series on Wednesday, September 30 and Thursday, October 1.
