Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters earned a split in Sunday afternoon's double-header with the Long Island Ducks, concluding the road schedule for the Skeeters. The Skeeters move to 63-69 on the season after the win and loss at Bethpage Ballpark.

Skeeters game one starter, Josh Geer was tagged with the loss in the opener. The former member of the San Diego Padres allowed two runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts over 5.0 innings to fall to 6-8 on the year.

Infielder Delwyn Young extended his on-base streak to a team season-high 27-straight games, going 1-for-3 with a single.

Long Island struck first in the first game in the bottom of the third. Lew Ford reached on a one-out infield single before back-to-back two-out base knocks from Dan Lyons and Mike Blanke allowed the Ducks to claim the lead.

The Ducks added an additional run in the bottom of the fourth to conclude the scoring for the game. Elmer Reyes led off the inning with a solo shot to give Long Island a 2-0 advantage.

Much like the earlier game, Long Island jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings of play. Fehlandt Lentini led off the home half of the first with a single to left and was sacrificed to second on a bunt. Ford followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Randy Ruiz hit a slow roller to third baseman Patrick Palmeiro who was unable to turn the double play, allowing the game's first run to score.

In the bottom of the second, Long Island started with back-to-back singles from Dan Lyons and Nelfi Zapata to put runners on first and third. A fielder's choice from Cody Puckett allowed the Ducks to move ahead 2-0.

The Skeeters cut the deficit in half in the top of the third. Amadeo Zazueta led off with a single to right before a strikeout and a flyout gave Sugar Land a pair of quick outs. Travis Scott worked a walk to extend the inning and an RBI single from Chris Wallace got the Skeeters on the scoreboard, 2-1.

Sugar Land continued to rally in the top of the fifth to push across the equalizer. Scott launched his 10th-home run of the season with a solo shot to tie the game. The long ball also extended Scott's lead over Delwyn Young in the Skeeters all-time home run record.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Skeeters broke the game open, pushing across the go-ahead run. Willy Taveras opened the inning with a double to right field before back-to-back walks to Jeff Dominguez and Scott loaded the bases. Pitcher Amalio Diaz continued to struggle with his command, firing a wild pitch to give the Skeeters the lead. Johan Limonta added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run single to right and chasing Diaz from the game. Palmeiro lifted a sacrifice fly to move the score to 6-2.
