Ducks Drop to Third Place with 2-0 Loss to Somerset
September 17, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
The Somerset Patriots took over the top spot in the Double-A Northeast by combining for a four-hit shutout to outduel the Akron RubberDucks, 2-0, on Friday night at Canal Park. Akron trails Somerset by one game and Bowie by a half-game for the league's two playoff spots with two games remaining.
Turning Point
Somerset cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Oswaldo Cabrera had a bunt single, Michael Beltre doubled to left field, and Dermis Garcia and Jesus Bastidas hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to right field to put the Patriots on top, 2-0.
Mound Presence
Konnor Pilkington rolled through the Somerset lineup early, striking out seven of the first 11 batters to face him while allowing just two base runners. The Patriots got to Pilkington in the fourth for two runs, but he settled down and retired the side in the fifth. In total, Pilkington tossed five innings, allowing two runs while striking out nine batters. Jake Miednik followed with three scoreless innings, striking out five. Nic Enright tossed a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
Duck Tales
Akron threatened in the bottom of the third against Patriots right-hander Hayden Wesneski. Will Brennan and Brayan Rocchio hit back-to-back singles with two outs to put runners on first and second, but a fly out to center by Jose Fermin ended the inning. Akron threatened again in the bottom of the eighth, when back-to-back walks to Clark Scolamiero and Brennan put the tying run on base with one out, but a flyout and ground out kept Akron off the board. The RubberDucks left seven runners on base while going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
Notebook
Somerset (72-45) and Bowie (72-46) can each clinch a playoff spot with one more win. To earn a playoff spot, Akron (71-46) must win both remaining games, or win one and have Bowie lose both of its remaining games. An Akron loss and a Bowie win would eliminate the RubberDucks on Saturday...Brennan extended his season-long on-base streak to 18 games... Rocchio extended his season-long hitting streak to 10 games...Game Time: 2:37...Attendance: 5,828.
