Lancaster Stormers News Release

Four two-out hits, two in the sixth and two in the ninth, salted away a 7-4 victory and a four-game sweep of the Lancaster Barnstormers Thursday afternoon in front of 3,506 on Camp Day at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the score tied, 1-1, entering the sixth, Long Island picked up consecutive doubles by Ray Navarrete (to left) and Jose Herrera to right center for a 2-1 lead. The inning almost ended there as Eric Ackerman (3-9) bounced back to retire the next two hitters. He walked Estee Harris, and Matt Cavagnaro delivered a ground single to the left of third baseman Aaron Herr for a 3-1 lead. John Pachot hit a foul pop up on the first base side which Ryan Mulhern dropped for an error. Pachot punished the Barnstormers for the gaffe, hitting a liner to right center with his new life. Lloyd Turner came up just short with his diving try as Harris and Cavagnaro crossed the plate, extending the Ducks lead to four.

Lancaster battled back on solo home runs. Mulhern and Michael Campbell hit consecutive shots off Josue Matos with one out in the sixth, and Mulhern connected in the eighth, planting a ball on the sidewalk atop the left field hill, one of the longest homers ever by a Barnstormer at Clipper Magazine Stadium, slicing the lead to 5-4.

Between the home runs, however, came an inning that misfired. In the seventh, Lloyd Turner led off with a single to right center off Matos and L.J. Biernbaum followed with a walk. Sidearming southpaw Ron Flores entered from the bullpen for a matchup against Matt Watson, and the Lancaster cleanup batter bounced into a 4-6 force play. Flores went to 3-2 on Herr. Lancaster started Watson from first, and Herr struck out for the second out of the inning. Watson stopped short of second, and Turner broke for the plate. He was quickly snuffed out on a return throw back from second, and the inning died.

Eddie Camacho retired the side in order in the eighth inning but gave up a leadoff single to Pachot in the ninth. He got two outs, each advancing Pachot a base, before Navarrete cracked his second double of the game into left center for a 6-4 lead. Herrera singled up the middle, moving the lead back to three.

Joe Valentine fired the bottom of the ninth for his second save.

The Barnstormers head to Camden for three games but will return home on Tuesday to face the Newark Bears on a night where the team will pay homage to Negro League baseball.
