Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

With one swing of the bat in the bottom of the seventh inning, Southern Maryland's Jeremy Owens ended what had been an unusually tough night for the Blue Crabs against the York Revolution. Owens' grand slam high over the scoreboard in left field propelled Southern Maryland to an 8-6 victory over York. The win, the Blue Crabs' ninth straight over the Revolution, increased Southern Maryland's season record to 15-2 and 10-1 at home against their rivals from Pennsylvania. What a week it has been for the Blue Crabs' captain. Since Monday, Owens has eight hits in 16 at-bats and 12 RBI. Among Owens' eight hits, five have gone for home runs, including Tuesday night's tying home run and Thursday night's go-ahead grand slam. With the grand slam, Owens increased his Atlantic League-leading home run total to 21. While Owens' carried the Blue Crabs' offense, relievers Mike James, Matt Schweitzer and Derrick Ellison combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball in relief of starter Ryan Bicondoa. James picked up his second win of the season and Ellison captured his first save in as many chances as the Blue Crabs' improved to 14-2 when Bicondoa starts. Until a spurt of wildness knocked him out of the game in the bottom of the sixth, York starter Shane Youman pitched well, allowing just two earned runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. Revolution reliever Travis Phelps picked up the loss, his fourth of the 2009 season. The Blue Crabs return to action Friday night for the first of a three-game series against the Newark Bears. Southern Maryland's Joe Gannon (7-10, 5.53) makes his team-high 18th start for the Blue Crabs against Newark left-hander Matt Smith (0-0. 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
