Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, FL- In the biggest series of the second half, the Palm Beach Cardinals biggest bat delivered. Designated-hitter Matt Dryer launched a two-run homer into the night, over the left-field fence, as the Cardinals grab a 5-4 victory over the Daytona Cubs at Roger Dean Stadium.

Matt Dryer was 0-for-3 coming into the at-bat, with two strikeouts, before hitting his 14th homerun of the year. Daytona closer Paul Schappert (0-1) was a perfect 14-for-14 in save appearances before blowing tonight's game.

Daytona scored the game's first run in the first inning, but ultimately came away disappointed, after loading the bases with the first three batters. Palm Beach starter Mitchell Boggs settled down, allowing just an RBI single by Ryan Harvey. Boggs has now allowed a season-high 13 runs in the first inning.

Palm Beach rallied back with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, as Matt Pagnozzi collected an RBI single and Rayner Laya lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring Mike Ferris.

In the seventh inning, the Cubs did take a 4-3 lead, knocking out Boggs in the process. Rayner Laya committed a crucial error in the frame, with Boggs fielding a come backer and firing to second base, but Laya was unable to secure the catch with Nate Spears bearing down on him.

Reliever Zach Zuercher grabbed the victory, pitching 1 1/3 inning, allowing just one hit and fanning two batters.

Closer Mike Sillman gathered his league-leading 32nd save of the season, striking out the side in the ninth.
