Clearwater Threshers News Release

Clearwater, FL - Clearwater Threshers pitcher Julio De La Cruz threw a complete game no-hitter versus the Sarasota Reds at Bright House Networks Field in Clearwater on Friday night.

It only took De La Cruz 94 pitches in the nine inning gem that the Threshers won 5-0. He struck out five batters and limited the Reds to two base runners: one on a walk in the fourth and one on an error in the seventh.

An announced crowd of 5,906 rose to their feet just before the game ended on a looping line drive to second baseman Tim Moss.

Brian Burgamy starred offensively for the Threshers. He scored what proved to be the only necessary run in the first inning and added insurance with a three-run homer in the eighth.

It was the first no-hitter thrown by a Threshers pitcher and only the second in Clearwater's history. Andy Carter threw the other nine inning no-hitter at Jack Russell Stadium on August 23, 1992 as part of the only double no-hitter in minor league history. That game ended in a 1-0 victory for the Clearwater Phillies over the Winter Haven Red Sox.

Julio improved to 2-1 with a 2.63 ERA in four August starts. In 27.1 innings he has struck out 14 batters while limiting opponents to a .182 batting average. Previously, he was named Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week (June 26-July 2) for his efforts. For the season, he stands at 6-9 with a 4.11 ERA in 25 games.

The near perfect game capped off a successful Pitch for Pink promotion that raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research and awareness.

The win pulls the Threshers to a 1.5 game deficit behind the West Division leading Fort Myers Miracle. The Threshers and Reds continue the series on Saturday night at 7:05 pm. The home stand concludes Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 pm game.
