Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - Russell Mitchell drove in all four runs for the Vero Beach Dodgers who topped the Jupiter Hammerheads 4-2 Friday night at Holman Stadium. The Dodgers victory ended a six-game losing streak but extended Jupiter's slide to nine games. The series continues Saturday at 6:30 PM with Back-to-School Fireworks to follow the game. Offensively the night belong to Mitchell. He led off the fourth inning with his third home run in 11 games since his promotion from Low-A Columbus. But the most important hit came in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mitchell laced a double down the left-field line that cleared the bases and gave the Dodgers a 4-2 lead that would turn into the final score. Vero starter Alberto Bastardo (5-5) overcame a rough beginning to earn the win and even his season record. Jupiter's leadoff hitter Dante Brinkley began the game with a single and Brad Davis followed with a homer for a 2-0 lead. Two more Hammerheads reached base before Bastardo recorded a double play and a strikeout to escape further damage. The Venezuelan lefty then allowed just three singles over the next five innings. Ryan Ketchner followed him up with two perfect relief innings. Adam Thomas pitched the ninth for his second save. Jupiter loaded the bases against him with a walk, single and - with two outs - a wild pitch on a third strike that would have ended the game. Still, Steve Gendron's ground ball fielder's choice ended the game and halted the Dodgers second-longest losing streak of the year.
