Drive's Road Trip Begins with 2-1 Loss in 10 Innings
June 5, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Lexington, KY - Making his second start of the 2009 season, right-hander Stephen Fife baffled Legends' batters for five innings. The University of Utah product did not allow a single base-runner, while striking out seven.
However, once his outing ended, the Legends (29-25) were able to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, and eventually record a 2-1 walk-off victory in the bottom of the 10th in the series opener.
Will Middlebrooks broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth, belting his first homer of the season to lead off the frame. But that would be Greenville's (29-24) only run as the Legends' pitching staff allowed just one more base hit in the final five innings.
In the seventh, Steve Brown laced a one-out double off reliever Mike Lee (0-1) and was able to advance to third on a fielding error by David Mailman. That error proved costly as Brian Pellegrini followed with a single to shallow centerfield, deep enough to tie the game. However, the next two batters popped out to first baseman Anthony Rizzo, to make Brown's run unearned.
It wasn't until the bottom of the tenth that a winner was decided. Federico Hernandez led off with a single, and advanced to second on Brandon Barnes' sacrifice bunt. Marques Williams replaced Hernandez as a pinch runner and scored as Ronald Ramirez followed with a single to center.
The Drive, who dropped to 2.0 games behind the first place Charleston RiverDogs, and Legends continue their series tomorrow at Applebee's Park with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Southpaw Nick Hagadone will be activated on Greenville's roster prior to tomorrow's game to make his first start since undergoing Tommy John Surgery last May, as Lexington counters with left-hander Brad Dydalewicz (3-0, 0.64 ERA).
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Thursday, June 11th when they host the Asheville Tourists for two games, followed by a three-game set with the Hot Rods.
