Pitching Dominates in Braves Sweep

Rome, GA -The Rome Braves swept the Augusta GreenJackets in a doubleheader on Friday night in front of 3,122 fans at State Mutual Stadium. Rome won game one 1-0, and game two 7-2.

Game one was dominated by pitching and defense, and remained scoreless until the last frame. In the bottom of the seventh Braeden Schlehuber hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Calvin Culver who earlier had walked to give the Braves a 1-0 victory. Brett DeVall (4-2) pitched seven shut out innings, allowing two hits, and striking out five. Eric Surkamp (3-2) was the loser for Augusta.

In game two the Braves took an early 4-0 lead in the second inning highlighted by RBI singles from Schlehuber, Stephen Shults, Ryan Barba, and Luis Sumoza. In the third, Rome added three insurance runs on a three run homer by Schlehuber to make it a 7-0 game. Schlehuber drove in five runs on the night.

In the sixth, Augusta scored their first run of the game on an RBI single by Matt Klimas. The GreenJackets added another run in the seventh when Johnny Monell scored from third on a ground out by Josh Mazzola for the 7-2 final. Braves starter Dimasther Delgado, making his Rome debut allowed one hit, and struck out eight in four innings of work.

Paul Clemens (2-3) gets the win for Rome, while Kyle Nicholson (4-5) was the loser for Augusta.
