Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Rome, GA - The Rome Braves swept a doubleheader from the Augusta GreenJackets at State Mutual Stadium Friday night, winning 1-0 in game one and 7-2 in the nightcap. Augusta struggled offensively and managed just six hits combined in the twinbill.
With the opening game tied scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, Augusta's Eric Surkamp walked Calvin Culver with one out. Braden Schlehuber then drilled a line drive over the head of a drawn-in Charlie Culberson at third, scoring Culver with the winning run on a double into the left field corner to give Rome the 1-0 victory.
The game was a classic pitchers' duel between Surkamp and Brett DeVall. Rome's DeVall was seven outs away from a seven-inning perfect game before Andy D'Alessio reached on an error with two outs in the fifth. DeVall kept his no-hitter intact until the sixth when Ben Woodbury reached on an infield single.
Surkamp (3-2) scattered five hits, but remained unscathed until the seventh inning when Schlehuber's double won the game for the Braves. He struck out six and walked two in 6.1 innings. Surkamp was aided by a pair of double plays and a pick off at first base.
DeVall (4-2) held his cool to pick up the complete game shutout win, only the third this season in the South Atlantic League. DeVall threw seven scoreless frames, allowing two hits without a walk while striking out five.
In the nightcap, Kyle Nicholson was the victim of bad luck, with seven hits against him in the second inning coming mostly on flares and seeing-eye singles. The only extra-base hit off Nicholson of the ten hits he allowed came in the third on Schlehuber's three-run home run.
The Braves tallied four in the second on seven singles and three in the third on two singles leading into the Schlehuber blast to chase Nicholson (4-5). In his first loss in over a month, Nicholson threw two-plus innings, allowing seven runs on ten hits without a walk or strikeout.
