Grand Rapids Drive News Release
GRAND RAPIDS - The Grand Rapids Drive (5-3) used a 16-3 run to open the fourth quarter to defeat the Long Island Nets (5-2) at home on Saturday night by a final score of 116-107. The Drive have now won three straight games after losing the first game of their current six-game home stand. The Nets drop their second game in three tries on a road trip after starting the season 4-0.
Pistons assignee Khyri Thomas had 24 points, leading Grand Rapids in scoring for the second time this season. Keenan Evans and Speedy Smith had efficient games out of the Drive backcourt, as Smith had 23 points, Evans had 21 and the two combined to shoot 17-of-29 from the floor. Elijah Brown also chipped in a season-high 13 points to lead the Drive bench.
For Long Island, Alan Williams went through some foul trouble and ultimately fouled out, but still led the team and posted the game's only double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes. Rodion Kurucs added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Nets and Shannon Scott and Theo Pinson each scored 15 points, with Scott also adding seven rebounds and seven assists.
The two teams were tied at 76 going into the third quarter despite a back-and-forth battle in the previous three quarters with 11 lead changes and 12 ties. The Drive led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, but couldn't hang on to the lead and had to resort to their fourth-quarter surge to pull out the win.
The Drive did not have their usual volume from behind the arc, as the Nets got up 44 three-point attempts while the Drive went just 7-of-27. But they were able to make it up with a season-best effort in the paint, shooting 47 percent from the floor overall in the game and going 23-of-34 in the paint through the first three quarters.
The Drive will conclude their home stand with two games in a row against the Lakeland Magic on Wednesday and Friday. The Nets will return home and square off with the Greensboro Swarm on Tuesday in their next game.
