Grand Rapids Drive News Release
GRAND RAPIDS - The Grand Rapids Drive (3-3) evened their record back up on Saturday night, defeating the Canton Charge (2-3) with their best defensive effort of the season by a 90-82 final at home. The Drive allowed just 10 points in the fourth quarter, including only five points in the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter.
Detroit Pistons assignee Bruce Brown Jr.'s 16 points served as the team high for the Drive as many of their players struggled with their shots. Scottie Lindsey had a season-high 14 points off the bench, and Johnny Hamilton responded well to his first game outside the starting lineup with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Keenan Evans provided 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists as well for Grand Rapids and Henry Ellenson made an impact with 15 rebounds despite an off game offensively.
For the Charge, JaCorey Williams played just 15 minutes but finished tied for the team lead with 21 points and also had nine rebounds. Kobi Simmons was the other Charge player with 21 points, Bonzie Colson picked up a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Emanuel Terry had six blocks.
The Drive were not able to get much going from the floor as a team, as they hit only 34 percent of their field goals and 24 percent of their three-point attempts. The Charge held Ellenson, the Drive's leading scorer, to just 2-of-16 shooting. But Grand Rapids managed to make up for it with their defense and consistent trips to the free throw line. They drew 36 attempts on the night and converted 81 percent of them, while the Charge comparatively drew 21 foul shots and hit 13 of them for 62 percent.
The lack of three-point shooting by the Canton offense also hindered their comeback attempts down the stretch. They opted for a paint-heavy offense, shooting just 11 three-pointers on the night and hitting three of them. The three made three-pointers is the fewest made by an opponent against the Drive in franchise history.
Despite this, the Charge forced a very back-and-forth game until the Drive surged in the fourth quarter. There were already over 15 lead changes by halftime, and by the end of the game there were 19 lead changes and eight ties.
Having completed a back-to-back, the Drive are off until Wednesday night, when they will stay at home and meet with the Wisconsin Herd for the first time this year. Canton's next opportunity to get back in the win column will come against the Delaware Blue Coats on the road Tuesday.
