Greenville Drive News Release
For a third consecutive night at Fluor Field, the winner was decided late in the ballgame. It was the Charleston RiverDogs (24-16) who came out on top on Sunday, as they scored two in the top of the ninth to defeat the Greenville Drive (13-30), 9-7. With the victory, the RiverDogs take three of four games from the Drive in the series.
RiverDogs nine-hole hitter Claudio Custodio, played the role of hero, as he smacked a solo homer in the eighth inning to cut the Drive lead to 7-6. He came up again in the ninth and crushed a two-run home run over the Green Monster against Gerardo Olivares (0-1) to give the RiverDogs a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Phil Wetherell (1-0) got the win for Charleston, as he worked three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Both starting pitchers struggled on Sunday, as Greenville's Austin Maddox went four and two-thirds innings, scattering nine hits and five runs. Charleston's Daniel Camarena went four and a third innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits.
After allowing a run in the top of the first, the Drive answered right back in the bottom half with three of their own. Drew Turocy lined an RBI double to left to tie the game, while David Chester's bloop single to center scored another run. Tim Roberson followed with a sacrifice fly to right for the third run.
Charleston scored a pair against Maddox in the fifth, as long solo homers by Greg Bird and Yeicok Calderon pushed the RiverDogs out in front, 5-4. Once again, however, the Drive roared back to take the lead with three runs in the bottom half. Bryan Johns, who smacked a solo homer in the previous inning, singled up the middle to bring home two, and Jose Vinicio followed by lining an RBI double into the left field corner.
The RiverDogs tied the game up in the eighth against Justin Haley when Custodio homered and a crucial two-out error scored the tying run.
After going 2-4, Mookie Betts extended his hitting streak to 14 games. He was also awarded the Hale's Jewelers Player of the Homestand. During the homestand, Betts hit .500 (8-16) with two home runs while drawing four walks, scoring five runs and stole three bases.
Johns added a pair of hits and homered for the second consecutive game. Vinicio and Turocy also collected two hits apiece. Jake Cave had a big night for Charleston, going 4-6 with two RBIs. Bird, Custodio and Kelvin De Leon had two hits each.
The Drive will hit the road on Monday to begin a three-game series with the Hickory Crawdads. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05. LHP Brian Johnson (1-2, 4.13 ERA) will throw for the Drive, while Hickory's scheduled starter is RHP Connor Sadzeck (2-2, 2.70).
