No-Hitter Caps Doubleheader Sweep

Salisbury, MD - It was a special day at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium Sunday afternoon, as the Hickory Crawdads received not one, but five great pitching performances resulting in a doubleheader sweep over the Delmarva Shorebirds. C.J. Edwards tossed a 7-inning complete game in the 'Dads 4-1 victory in game one, but was actually outshined by the efforts of Luis Parra, Keone Kela, Ryan Bores, and Alexander Claudio who combined to throw a no-hitter in the Crawdads 1-0 win in the nightcap.
The no-no was the first such game for the 'Dads since 2009 when Martin Perez, Tyler Tufts and Fabio Castillo no-hit Bowling Green.
Edwards started off the day actually battling his control, as the Crawdads ace walked the first two batters of the game on eight pitches. The slender right-hander would give up an RBI single to Delmarva DH Nik Balog in the inning, before settling in to retire the next 14 Shorebirds in a row.
The 'Dads were able to tie up the game in the fourth when Joey Gallo lined a solo home run to right. Gallo's SAL leading 12th homer of the year deadlocked the game at 1-1, a score that would remain until the seventh.
Facing the threat of potential extra innings, Crawdads center fielder Lewis Brinson crushed a 2-out, two-strike, 3-run bomb to left to give Hickory their 4-1 advantage. Edwards would go on to toss a perfect bottom of the seventh to secure the 4-1 win.
Edwards (5-1) finished the contest with a 7-inning complete game, allowing just one run on one hit, two walks and seven strikeouts. Shorebirds reliever Dennis Torres (0-1) took the loss for allowing Brinson's home run. Delmarva starter Josh Hader received a no-decision after going six innings and giving up just one run on two hits with nine strikeouts.
As good as the pitching was in game one, both teams upped the ante in the nightcap.
Making his Crawdads debut, Parra started the second game similarly to Edwards with six straight balls. The early wildness resulted in a leadoff walk to Gregory Lorenzo, but Parra was able to bounce back with a strike-him-out, throw-him-out double play where catcher David Lyon gunned down Lorenzo trying to steal second.
Parra settled in from there, retiring the next seven batters he faced to complete his three hitless innings.
The Crawdads offense meanwhile scored its only run of the game in the fourth. Gallo and Mazara led off the inning with singles while Jordan Akins drove in the lone run with an RBI, fielder's choice groundout to third.
That would be all the offense the Hickory hurlers would need. Recently activated righty reliever Keone Kela entered in the fourth with a hitless inning of work, highlighted by a diving catch from shortstop Luis Marte to rob Tucker Nathans of a single up the middle.
Right-hander Ryan Bores followed in the fifth and continued the pitching dominance with a pair of no-hit frames. The only blemish for Bores was a walk to Narron to start the sixth, which ended up being the last base runner for the Shorebirds.
With three outs to go and a no-hitter on the line the Crawdads passed the ball to their best reliever in Claudio, who proceeded to set down the Shorebirds in order in the 7th with a groundout to first baseman Jorge Alfaro giving the 'Dads the 1-0 win.
Bores (1-1) earned the win for Hickory with his two innings of work while Claudio (6) picked up the save for closing out the win. Delmarva starting pitcher Brady Wager (2-2) was the hard luck loser, as the righty threw a 7-inning complete game, allowing just one run on six hits with seven strikeouts.
In sweeping the doubleheader, the Crawdads pitching staff combined to hold the Shorebirds to just one run on one hit, four walks and 13 strikeouts over the two games.
With the pair of wins Hickory (23-19) is just three games back of Hagerstown for first place in the SAL North Division. Delmarva (12-22) falls six games back of the pace.
The Crawdads now return to L.P. Frans for a seven game home stand, starting with a three game series against the Greenville Drive. First pitch Monday night is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
