Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
After a season of upsets, set backs and hard hitting hockey action-- the Moose Jaw Warriors find their fate set on just one single game. After taking a 2-0 lead in the 1st round series against the top ranked Hitmen; hockey fans were shocked at the turn of events.
Now, 72 regular season games and 6 playoff games later-- it all comes down to game seven. Never before has an 8th place team overtaken the top team in the Eastern Conference. No one expected a team who ended the 08/09 season in the bottom of the league to push the Calgary Hitmen to a game seven.
A young squad lead by veteran & record setter Jason Bast has proved anything can happen. With the return of the Warriors leading scorer and NHL top prospect Quinton Howden, game seven is sure to be quite a match up. Monday night is likely to come down to a battle of the goal tenders. Jeff Bosch has been magnificent in all three of the Warriors wins. Martin Jones has proven just why he represented Team Canada at this year's World Junior Championship.
Former Warriors Joel Broda and Giffen Nyren proved an asset to Calgary in game six. Jason Bast and Thomas Frazee lead the Warriors in the series. Rookie Tony Honejsek is one to watch, Honejsek scored a pair in game 5 for the tribe.
Game 7 will be live on SHAW Monday night. For the entire game call, tune into the voice of the Warriors James Gallo on Country 100.
GAME 6: round one still undecided
In front of a sold out arena, the Warriors looked to take down the Hitmen in game 6 of the series. The Hitmen got on the board first with a Shattock goal. Cowan would add another for the 2 goal advantage in the first twenty. Broda silenced the crowd with a quick goal only 1:40 into the second. Thomas Frazee kept the Warriors hopes alive with a power play goal to get the home crowd cheering. Former Warrior Giffen Nyren scored next for the Hitmen. Chad Suer fired back with a power play goal to shrink the lead to two. Connor Cox banked one home to bring the Warriors within one heading into the second intermission. Period three was all Hitmen. A goal from Cowan and two from Schultz ended any thoughts of a Warrior comeback. The Hitmen win sealed a game seven matchup Monday night. Final score 7-3.
GAME 5: hitmen wave off elimination
With the chance to finish off the Hitmen's playoff quest, the Moose Jaw Warriors headed to Calgary for game 5. The first Calgary goal would get waved off, giving Tony Honejsek the opportunity to put the Warriors on the board first. The Warriors would head into the second period with a single goal lead. Kozun, Fiddler and Stone would all score in the second period. Shultz would score one more Calgary marker to ensure a Hitmen victory. Tony Honejsek would add one more for the tribe. Final score 5-2.
Game 4: MAGIC NUMBER FOUR
Lucky number four. four goals in game four gave the Moose Jaw Warriors a 2 game series lead in a best of seven series. The Warriors took games 1 & 2 in Calgary-- with four goals scored in each win. Four seems like the magic number for the tribe.
Game four began with another Jason Bast goal to get the crowd on its feet. Nearing the 8:00 minute mark, the hockey game seemed to take a lucky home bounce. On the power play, Warriors defensemen Chad Suer banked a shot off the boards which took a sharp angle onto Martin Jones. The shot caught Jones and gave the Warriors a 2 goal lead. Joel Broda would silence the excited fans with a power play goal to end the first.
The second twenty began with a Thomas Frazee marker to put the Warriors back up by a pair. The fourth Warriors goal would come in the second on a Hitmen turnover, picked up by Frazee and snipped to a streaking Nathan MacMaster who would score his first of the playoffs.
The last period showcased just why the Hitmen are the best in the East. Pressing hard, youngster Cody Sylvester and Giffen Nyren both beat Bosch to bring the Hitmen within one. In the dieing minutes, Calgary made a push for the equalizer. With every Warrior blocking shots and a steady Jeff Bosch, the Warriors grabbed their third win of the series. Final score 4-3.
