Winston-Salem Dash News Release

FREDERICK, MD (MAY 3, 2011) - Oliver Drake silenced the Dash offense over eight scoreless innings as Frederick captured a 4-2 victory over Winston-Salem on Tuesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Between the first and ninth innings, the Keys retired 23 consecutive Dash hitters and forced a rubber game between the teams on Wednesday morning.

Winston (9-16) had a chance to put a run on the board in the first inning against Drake. Jose Martinez singled and Jared Mitchell followed with a double to right field. Martinez was sent home on the play, but was thrown out on a relay from L.J. Hoes to stymie the scoring threat. Ian Gac followed with a strikeout, the first of 23 straight Dash batters to be set down in order over the course of the night.

The Keys (11-13) took a lead with two unearned runs in the third against Cameron Bayne, in part thanks to a swirling wind that persisted throughout the evening. Brian Ward walked and got to second base when Garabez Rosa's seemingly innocent pop fly to center became much trickier to track down because of the wind. The ball dropped between Mitchell and second baseman Daniel Wagner for a hit.

After a sacrifice bunt and a pop up, the wind again wreaked havoc on a play that should have ended the inning. Hoes popped up a pitch in foul territory, but third baseman Austin Yount could not catch the ball and he was charged with an error. Two pitches later, Hoes skipped a ball under the glove of shortstop Kyle Shelton for a hit to score two runs and give the Keys a 2-0 lead.

Both offenses stalled following Hoes' hit, as Bayne and Orlando Santos kept the Keys off the scoreboard until the eighth. Trent Mummey led off the inning with a single and scored when Hoes drilled a two-run home run to left field to make it a 4-0 Frederick advantage.

Sean Gleason entered the game to start the ninth and retired the first man he faced, the 23rd straight Dash hitter to be set down. That streak ended when Austin Yount walked; he was replaced on the base paths on a fielder's choice by Wagner. Martinez kept the Dash from being shut out with a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth to cut the deficit to two, but Mitchell struck out looking to finish the ballgame and give Frederick the win.

Drake (2-0) was marvelous in collecting the victory. He tossed a career-high eight innings, yielding just two hits and no walks while striking out eight. Bayne (2-3) was the tough-luck loser after giving up two unearned runs on six hits in six innings.

Gac's 14-game hit streak ended, as the slugger went 0 for 3 on the night. His streak was tied for the longest in the Carolina League this season.

The Dash and Keys finish their three-game series on Wednesday morning in a game that starts at 11 a.m. LHP Joe Serafin (0-1, 4.00) makes his fifth start of the season for Winston-Salem against RHP Bobby Bundy (2-2, 2.37). First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. with the audio broadcast of the game beginning at 10:45 on www.wsdash.com .

The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday night to start a six-game home stand against the Lynchburg Hillcats and Potomac Nationals.
