Frederick Keys News Release
On a gloomy night in Frederick, MD, RHP Oliver Drake shined in the Keys 4-2 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash. After allowing two hits in the first inning of the game, Drake retired the final 22 Dash hitters he faced as he tossed a career-high eight innings en route to his second win of the season. 2B LJ Hoes drove in all four runs for Frederick as they ended a three-game losing streak and improved to 11-13 on the season.
With one out in the top of the first inning, RF Jose Martinez singled to leftfield to give the Dash their first hit of the game. The next batter to the plate for Winston-Salem was CF Jared Mitchell. Mitchell doubled over the head of RF Miguel Abreu but Abreu quickly relayed a throw to 2B LJ Hoes. Hoes turned and fired a one hopper to C Brian Ward who applied to tag on Martinez at the plate. The play at the plate was the final threat Drake would face all night. Drake struck out DH Ian Gac to end the first and then retired the final 21 batters he faced. Over eight innings, he struck out eight, walked none, and allowed just two hits.
The Keys gave their starting pitcher some run support in the bottom of the third. With two down and runners on second and third, 2B LJ Hoes popped a pitch from RHP Cameron Bayne up in foul territory. 3B Austin Yount camped under the ball but was unable to make the catch. The Yount error kept the inning alive and one pitch later Hoes singled into centerfield to bring Brian Ward from third and SS Garabez Rosa from second.
Bayne exited the game after tossing six innings on Tuesday night. He allowed two runs, zero earned, on six hits while striking out one and walking two.
Still leading 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth, the Keys added two crucial insurance runs when LJ Hoes crushed a Orlando Santos offering deep to left for a two-run home run. Hoes' third home run of the year gave Frederick a four-run lead heading into the ninth inning.
RHP Sean Gleason relieved Drake for the final inning of the game. After surrendering a two-run homer to RF Jose Martinez, Gleason struck out CF Jared Mitchell to end the game.
Drake improved to 2-0 on the season while Cameron Bayne fell to 2-3.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Keys and Dash will play the rubber match of their three-game series. Frederick will turn to RHP Bobby Bundy (2-2, 2.37) for the finale while Winston-Salem sends LHP Joe Serafin (0-1, 4.00) to the hill.
First pitch on Senior Day at Harry Grove Stadium is set for 11:00 a.m. For tickets call 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
