May 3, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
- LHP Robbie Ross (2-1, 2.61) at LHP Mitchell Clegg (1-1, 4.60)
- BAGELS AND BASEBALL: Tuesday morning marks the Pelicans' first morning game of the season for the middle game of three at Potomac. Myrtle Beach will not host a school kids' day game this year at BB&T Coastal Field but will play one more morning contest in June here at Pfitzner Stadium. The Pelicans are no stranger to these games at Potomac. Almost one year ago to the day, the Birds and Nationals matched up for a 12:05 p.m. game with kids in attendance in Woodbridge on May 4, 2010. Behind catcher Matt Kennelly's first career grand slam, an 8-for-15 performance with runners in scoring position, and six brilliant innings from starter Randall Delgado, the Pelicans rocked their way to a 9-1 victory.
FALLIBLE: Myrtle Beach's top-ranked defense enters Tuesday with the best fielding percentage in the Carolina League (.978, 20 errors in 900 total chances). However, the Birds' gloves have let them down most when away from home. The Pelicans have not committed more than two errors in any home game but are 1-2 when committing three in a road game like last night.
DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN: Monday brought news from the Office of the Commissioner that Pelicans' right-handed reliever Andrew Doyle has been suspended by Major League Baseball for a violation of the Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Doyle's 50-game suspension began effectively immediately with the news. A fourth-round draft pick by the Rangers in 2009, Doyle had pitched in five games out of the bullpen for the Pelicans this season, going 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA. He becomes the fourth Pelicans player in the last calendar year to receive such a suspension, joining Atlanta Braves farmhands Yoel Campusano, Gerry Rodriguez, and Amadeo Zazueta last May.
