Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton starting pitcher Ty Boyles allowed only one unearned run over seven strong innings as the Dragons defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 5-3 on Tuesday night. The Dragons have won eight consecutive home games and have taken the first two games of the four-game set with Lansing.

Boyles left after facing the first two batters in the eighth inning. He allowed five hits and one walk while striking out seven. Over Boyles' last three starts, he has allowed just one unearned run in 17 and two-thirds innings.

The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Mitch Piatnik reached on a broken-bat single with one out and scored on Zack Shields' triple to right field.

In the sixth, the Dragons scored four runs to take a commanding 5-0 lead. With two outs and the bases empty, Luis Gonzalez singled to left field and Piatnik reached on a bunt single. Shields walked with the bases loaded. Brantley Bell then lifted a single to center field to drive in both Gonzalez and Piatnik, and Nick Senzel followed with a single through the middle to bring in Shields and Bell to make it 5-0.

The Lugnuts scored one run in the eighth before rallying in the ninth to threaten to tie or take the lead. Lansing collected three hits plus a walk and had the tying run at first base against Dragons reliever Sarkis Ohanian before Ohanian notched a strikeout and pop out to end the game. Ohanian worked the final two innings, allowing three hits and two runs with three strikeouts in a non-save situation.

The Dragons collected 10 hits and have 40 over their last three games. Shields, Bell, and Piatnik each had two hits. Senzel had a hit and walk and drove in two runs. Bell also drove in two and had his fourth straight multi-hit game.

With eight straight home victories, the Dragons have a club record within reach. They won 10 straight home games in 2008 with a Dragons club that featured future Major Leaguers Zack Cozart and Devin Mesoraco.

The Dragons (22-36, 43-85) will host Lansing (28-30, 64-64) on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in the third game of the four-game series. Jesus Reyes (5-4, 2.15) will start for the Dragons against Lansing's Jordan Romano (3-2, 2.23).
