Dayton Dragons News Release
DAVENPORT, IA-Many players look forward to having three days off at the All-Star break. For Jay Bruce, the Midwest League All-Star Game in Davenport, Iowa was just another day at the ballpark. Bruce went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double, a single, three runs scored, and two stolen bases on his way to capturing the "Star of Stars" Award given to the game's best player.
After struggling during the Home Run Derby by only hitting one long ball, Bruce bounced back with a stellar performance during the game itself. In the third inning, Bruce picked up a single, stole second, and came around to score the go-ahead run to put the East up 2-1.
The Eastern Division All-Stars wouldn't need more runs, but Bruce wasn't finished yet. In the seventh, Bruce led off the inning with a double to right. Dragons' teammate Eric Eymann drew a walk, and both base runners advanced 90 feet with stolen bases. Craig Tatum became the third Dayton Dragon to bat in the inning, and he lifted a fly ball into the outfield, scoring Bruce on the sacrifice fly.
Just like he started the night in the Home Run Derby contest, Bruce wrapped up his MVP evening by playing long ball. After Justin Upton (South Bend) drew a lead off walk, Bruce connected for a two-run home run to round out the scoring at 7-1.
Dayton Dragons pitcher Johnny Cueto (ND) was rewarded for his strong first half of the season by getting the starting nod for the Eastern Division All-Stars. Cueto allowed one run on three hits, with one strikeout in his only inning of work. Blake Hendley (ND) also represented the Dragons on the mound, tossing two-thirds of an inning and striking out both batters he faced.
