Dayton, Ohio-The Dayton Dragons rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit and defeat the South Bend Cubs 3-2 on Tuesday night. The win was the Dragons sixth in a row and snapped the Cubs five-game winning streak.

South Bend scored a run in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and held that lead going to the bottom of the eighth. Dayton's Montrell Marshall started the inning with a double to the fence in right-center field to ignite the rally. Stuart Fairchild walked as Marshall advanced to third on a wild pitch on ball four to Fairchild. The first pitch to Michael Beltre advanced skipped past the catcher, allowing Marshall to score to tie the game at 2-2 as Fairchild went to second. Beltre's sacrifice bunt advanced Fairchild to third, and Leandro Santana delivered a deep sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Fairchild and give the Dragons a 3-2 lead.

Dragons reliever John Ghyzel pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save. Ghyzel has not allowed a run in four relief appearances this season. The victory was credited to Connor Ryan (1-0), who pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Fairchild singled, stole second, went to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on Hendrik Clementina's long sacrifice fly to right field. South Bend tied the game in the third on a solo home run by Jared Young. The Cubs took the lead in the fifth when Young doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Austin Filiere to make it 2-1.

Dragons starting pitcher Wendolyn Bautista worked four innings, allowing four hits and one run with four walks and three strikeouts. He threw 84 pitches and battled through his outing despite not having his typical strong command. Tyler Buffett tossed two innings in relief of Bautista, allowing three hits and two runs with two strikeouts. Cory Thompson pitched a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout.

The Dragons collected just four hits by four different players. Marshall's double was the only extra base hit.

Notes: With the win, the Dragons are now only one-half game out of first place in the Midwest League East Division. First place West Michigan was postponed on Tuesday as their record remained 6-2...A win on Wednesday would allow the Dragons to match their longest winning streaks of the 2017 season, when they won seven straight games two times.

Up Next: The Dragons (6-3) host South Bend (6-3) in the second game of the three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. Hunter Greene will start for the Dragons in his second outing of the year. South Bend will counter with Jose Albertos, the #3 prospect in the Chicago Cubs system.

All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.
