South Bend Cubs News Release
Dayton, OH: The South Bend Cubs looked to be on their way to their sixth consecutive win as they had control over the Dayton Dragons for most of the night on Tuesday.
Taking a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning behind solid performances from starter Cory Abbott and left hander Brendon Little, the Cubs were just six outs away from a series opening win against the Dragons. Dayton, who at one point did not have a baserunner for 12 consecutive batters against Abbott.
At the plate, the Cubs received another good night from Jared Young. Young, who entered tonight's game ranked in the top-10 league wide in batting average, hit his second home run of the year and finished 2-4.
It was Dayton, however, who found their groove at the right time.
The Dragons found a way to win tonight by capitalizing on South Bend's mistakes down the stretch. After Abbott came out of the game after five innings and allowing just a run, which was not earned, Little pitched two scoreless innings of his own.
It did not come easy for Little on Tuesday, however. After walking the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Little amazingly worked out of the bases loaded jam with no damage done. Left hander Yapson Gomez was then tasked with getting the final six outs of the night for the Cubs.
Gomez struggled in his inning of work by allowed two runs on one hit and a walk. Gomez threw two wild pitches in the 8th inning. One of the wild pitches scored a run, while the other advanced Stuart Fairchild, who then scored on an RBI sacrifice fly hit by Leandro Santana.
In a flash, the Cubs were down by a run and only had three outs remaining to come back in the game. In the top of the 9th, Dayton closer John Ghyzel worked an easy one-two-three frame while striking out one to give Dayton their sixth consecutive win.
With the loss, South Bend's five game winning streak is over. Their record sits at 6-3 on the season. With the West Michigan Whitecaps being postponed tonight, the Cubs had a chance to gain sole possession of first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division. They are now tied for second along with Dayton and Lansing.
South Bend will face the same Dayton Dragons team tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. from Fifth Third Field. Jose Albertos is scheduled to start for the Cubs tomorrow.
