Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind.-Matt Latos tossed six scoreless innings out of the bullpen as the Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Dayton fell to 6-16 on the season with the loss. They are 4-4 on their current 10-game road trip that will conclude with games in Fort Wayne Sunday afternoon and Monday night.
Latos, rated as the top pitching prospect in the San Diego Padres organization, entered the game in the fourth inning with Fort Wayne leading 2-1 and limited the Dragons to just three base runners over the final six innings on two hits and one walk. He struck out six.
Dragons pitchers battled out of trouble throughout the game and stranded 15 Fort Wayne base runners, but the Dayton offense rarely threatened.
Fort Wayne took the lead in the first inning when Blake Tekotte singled to center, went to third on a base hit to left by Jeudy Valdez, and scored on a single to left by Sawyer Carroll.
The TinCaps scored again in the second on a triple to right by Adam Zornes and a run-scoring groundout by Daniel Robertson to make it 2-0.
The Dragons got on the board in the top of the third when Miguel Rojas singled to right field and scored from first on a two-out double to left-center by Cody Puckett to pull the Dragons to within a run at 2-1.
But Fort Wayne scored again in the fifth when James Darnell doubled and scored on a two-out single by Robertson to make it 3-1. Blake Tekotte led off the sixth with a solo homer to right-center field, his second of the year, to make it 4-1. They added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Matt Fairel (1-2) suffered the loss. He worked four and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and three runs with six walks and two strikeouts.
Dayton finished with five hits. David Sappelt went 0 for 4 as his hitting streak was snapped at six games.
The Dragons meet Fort Wayne again Sunday at 3:05 p.m. in the second game of the series. Josh Ravin (1-2, 4.50) will start for Dayton against Fort Wayne's Simon Castro (0-1, 4.32). The Dragons next home game is Tuesday, May 5th against the Clinton Lumber Kings at Fifth Third Field.
